Summer Dental Habits

Along with doctor Jacob Myers DDS, the entire team here at our East Lansing pediatric dentistry practice is happy that summer is finally here! The summer season is a time for all of us, young and old alike, to get outdoors and enjoy the warm and pleasant weather! While summer vacation is a wonderful time for children when they can rest, relax and have fun, the disruption in routine can cause some kids to slip when it comes to maintaining good dental habits.

Even though your kids are not following their traditional school schedules, it's still very important that they maintain good dental habits. Keeping up with dental hygiene throughout the summer season is key to maintaining good oral health all year long. Here are a few tips to follow that can help your kids maintain good dental habits when on vacation, at summer camp or when enjoying those impromptu sleepovers with their pals.

Pack Dental Care Kits

A great way to ensure your kids are always prepared to care for their teeth and gums when away from home is to pack small dental care kits they can take along with them. Simply use a small zippered pouch and fill it with their toothbrush, toothpaste and floss so your children have the tools they need to brush and floss.

Provide Healthy Snacks

A key aspect of maintaining good dental health is eating a healthy and balanced diet. Instead of allowing your kids to snack on cookies, candies and other sweets between meals, have plenty of healthy snacks on hand like fresh fruits and vegetables, berries, nuts and natural yogurt.

Create Reminders

To help your kids remember to brush and floss their teeth, consider keeping a fun brushing & flossing chart so you and your kids can keep track of their oral hygiene routine. You could place a colorful sticker on the chart at the end of each day once your kids have completed their oral hygiene and then reward them with a special trip to the park when they've earned a set number of stars each week. There are even apps you can download to the devices your children use to remind them it's time to care for their teeth. And the good news is that most of these apps are free!

Summertime offers kids a million reasons to smile! By following these tips, you can ensure that your child's smile remains beautiful and healthy throughout the summer and beyond! Dr. Jake would like to wish all our patients and their families a happy and safe summer season!
