At the practice of Dr. Jacob Myers DDS, we strive to be your choice when you’re looking for East Lansing or Dewitt dentistry for kids. As your Dewitt children’s dentist, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of dental treatments that will help your child maintain an optimal level of dental health. We’d like to take this time to explain a little about why dental health is so important for kids and how you can improve it

Why Good Dental Health Is Important

According to several studies, tooth decay is actually the most common childhood disease in America. 50 percent of first graders will be afflicted with this disease and 80 percent of 17-year-olds will have it as well. Not only that, but the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research estimates that children will miss about 52 million hours of school every year due to oral health problems. Because there’s such a significant loss in academic performance, the Surgeon General has made children’s oral health a top priority.

As your trusted East Lansing and Dewitt children’s dentist, we’d like to help ensure that children are practicing good dental hygiene to prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems. Here are some of our tips that we recommend for maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and great dental health:

  • Your infant will need his or her gums thoroughly cleaned after each feeding by using a water-soaked infant cloth. This will stimulate the gum tissue and remove food.
  • By the age of three, you’ll want to teach your child about proper brushing techniques. Your child should use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste to brush.
  • Take your child to regular visits to the dentist to check for cavities and monitor for possible developmental problems.
  • Determine if the water supply in your home is fluoridated. If not, you can discuss supplemental fluoride options with your dentist.
  • Ask your dentist about sealant applications to protect your child’s teeth from decay.
