Top Dental Habits To Keep This Year

When you’re looking for East Lansing pediatric dentistry, we at the office of Dr. Jacob Myers DDS hope to be your premier choice. We’re proud to offer a wide array of pediatric dental services in addition to our gentle and dedicated treatment that’s needed to properly care for a younger patient. We believe that a lifetime of healthy smiles starts with a strong foundation of dental health at a young age. If you’d like to start your child on that path, we recommend these dental resolutions for the new year.

Maintain a Proper Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

The most important thing your child can do is to maintain a proper daily oral hygiene routine. Your child should brush his or her teeth once in the morning and again before bedtime for two minutes each session. This won’t just consist of brushing twice a day, but it will also include flossing daily as well. Doing this will remove food particles that get trapped in his or her teeth, which can lead to tooth decay.

Cut Back on the Sugar

When it comes to the health of your child’s teeth, it’s just as important to watch the different foods that he or she eats. The more sugar your child eats, the more likely that the sugar is going to eat away at his or her tooth enamel. Now, we don’t suggest that you completely cut out all the sugary foods (not even we could do that!), but we recommend to let your child only eat them in moderation. Try limiting your child to one sugary snack a day; we recommend eating a healthy alternative, such as fruits or yogurt, instead.

Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year

Visiting the dentist twice a year is essential in order for your child to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The dentist won’t just provide your child’s teeth with a deep cleaning in order for them to stay healthy, but it will also be a time to check your child’s mouth for cavities or any other dental problems, in addition to helping review brushing habits. The dentist can make added brushing or dental recommendations based on the current health of your child’s teeth and gums.
