Keep Your Child's Teeth Safe This School Year

With school back in session, we know many of our patients are enjoying seeing friends again after a long summer and getting back into the rhythms of classes, homework, and extracurricular activities. We also know how demanding a long school day can be for a child, and for parents, that puts an added pressure on keeping them energized by sending them to school with some snacks they can eat throughout the day. This can be tricky, though, as many of the snacks that are easily available aren't so great for teeth - and eating them regularly can put your child's teeth at risk.

Finding the Right Snacks for Teeth

As a busy parent, we can imagine how difficult it is to find or make good snacks for your child's school day. Between making breakfast, getting ready for work, and making sure your child has everything they need for the day ahead, it's easy to reach for a pre-packaged snack or throw together something easy that your child will like in the morning. Beware, though: many of these snacks spell danger for teeth.

Many pre-packaged snacks like chips, gummy snacks, or cookies are loaded with carbs and sugars, which bacteria feast upon and turn into harsh acids that attack your child's teeth. What's worse is that during school, your child likely won't have a chance to brush their teeth, so those acids will stay on the enamel for longer.

To prevent these problems, try to avoid snacks that are high in sugar or loaded with carbohydrates. Instead, look for quick, simple things that are lean and healthy: fruits and vegetables are great, as are nuts or hummus. Look for snacks that pack in crucial vitamins, minerals, and nutrients without all the added sugars, fats, and carbs.
